Steps Together - Frequently asked questions.

What is “Steps Together”?

“Steps Together” is a new two-year transitional programme by Tiphereth designed for school and college leavers with additional support needs.
It provides young people with the opportunity to explore future options, develop social and practical work skills, and gain confidence as they move towards adulthood.

Over the course of two years, students will:

  • Build a CV that showcases their learning, growth, and achievements

  • Develop social, emotional, and work-based skills

  • Plan their next steps toward education, volunteering, or employment

All learning materials and skills accreditation units are certified by Scottish Borders College, with whom Tiphereth has a long-standing partnership.

Why has this programme been created?

Many young people leave school without a clear sense of direction, and this can be particularly challenging for those with additional support needs.
Tiphereth recognises that some young people:

  • May not yet be ready for college or adult services

  • Need more time and support to find the right path

“Steps Together” offers a structured and supportive environment to help learners identify their strengths, skills, and interests, giving them the confidence and direction they need for their next stage in life.

How does the programme work?

  • The programme runs five days a week (Monday–Friday) over two academic years.

  • The first intake will be from August 2026 to July 2028, with new intakes each August thereafter.

  • The course is led by Tiphereth’s Skills for Growth team, supported by experienced health and social care professionals.

  • It combines practical learning, peer support, and individual development, ensuring a well-rounded and meaningful experience.

Where does the programme take place?

“Steps Together” is delivered at Tiphereth’s beautiful semi-rural site in Colinton, at the foot of the Pentland Hills, Edinburgh.
Our dedicated learning hub offers a welcoming and relaxed environment for personal growth and learning.

Learners will also:

  • Engage with the local community through citizenship modules and volunteering

  • Take part in two-week work experience placements each term across Tiphereth’s five craft and land-based workshops and social enterprise projects

This approach allows learners to explore both their creative and practical sides while gaining real-world experience.

Who can apply?

The “Steps Together” transition course is open to young people aged 18–25 years who are:

  • Within 12 months of leaving school or college, and

  • In receipt of, or eligible for, social work support funding (SDS Option 1),
or a combination of social work support and Independent Living Fund (ILF).

Funding must be agreed prior to enrolment and is provided in line with Tiphereth’s current Support Service Funding levels. Please contact Richard Costigan if you would like advice on obtaining funding.

Who is it suitable for?

The course is suitable for young people aged 18-25, with additional support needs. People accessing this programme will need to be independent with personal care, able to work within a small group, comfortable with transitions between different environments and able to manage a full time, 5 day a week commitment.

When does it start?

The first programme intake begins in August 2026 and runs until July 2028.
Subsequent intakes will follow annually each August.
